Defending champion Naomi Osaka has crashed out of the 2022_Australian Open at the hands of Amanda Anisimova with the unseeded American emerging with a 4-6, 6-3, (10-5) victory in their third-round match.

A lone break in the first set was the difference for Osaka with the 66th-ranked American claiming the only break in the second.

The third set was decided in a tiebreaker which Anisimova dominated to reach the Round of 16 at a major for the first time since the 2019 French Open.

Anisimova plays brilliant match to pull off shocker

Osaka broke in the opening game of the match as Anisimova threw in a pair of double faults. The court time major champion saved a break point in the sixth game with a slice of luck.

Serving for the set at 5-4, Osaka rounded off a fine set of tennis with a hold to love, capped off with a powerful smash to take a one-set lead.

Both women toughed out holds to open the second set and Anisimova made the breakthrough, a sublime drop shot on break point giving her a 3-1 lead.

The American's serve was proving to be a reliable weapon and she held with ease, but serving for the set at 5-3, a double-fault made it 30-30. Osaka donated the next two points with errors as the match was even.

Neither player was broken in the third set, Osaka saving two break points in the third game and Anisimova a pair of match points in the tenth game when the defending champion netted on both chances.

A tiebreaker would decide the match and Anisimova jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind some accurate groundstrokes. Both players displayed their power and strong serving, but the world number 66 led 7-4 after a forehand down the line.

The American brought up four match points with a swinging volley winner and on her first chane, an ace down the middle sealed the biggest win of her career.
