Aleksandar Tonev is on the verge of joining Celtic on loan from Aston Villa subject to a medical. The Bulgarian will become Ronny Deila's third summer signing after goalkeeper Craig Gordon and Norwegian striker Jo Inge Berget.

The Bhoys have had the winger on their radar since last summer, and even had a bid of £2m accepted by Lech Poznan but the Birmingham side offered an extra £500,000 for Tonev.

The 24 year old has not impressed in his time so far at Villa Park, however, and only made 17 appearances last season, prompting manager Paul Lambert to send Tonev out on loan.

Meanwhile, rumours of Georgios Samaras returning to Celtic are still rife after the Greek winger turned down an offer to join French side Olympique Lyonnais.

Samaras left Celtic at the end of last season after his contract expired, closing the curtains on a seven year stint in Glasgow in which the 29 year old made 171 appearances for the Hoops.

It is believed that Celtic boss Ronny Deila has spoken to the club about offering Samaras a new contract and it would seem that the player himself wants to go back to the Scottish champions.

The former Manchester City man has reportedly knocked back offers from Besiktas, Lokomotiv Moscow and a big money deal with a Chinese club, worth over £5m a year, while Southampton, Hamburg SV and Sevilla are also interested in obtaining his services.
