Tottenham Hotspur head into the game at Anfield looking for a win as they aim to catch up with league leaders Leicester City, who currently sit five points in front of the Lilywhites.

On the other hand, Liverpool will look to bounce back after losing to Southampton after being 2-0 up with half an hour to go.

The North London club have only the Premier League to play for now and so will look to gather as many points as possible in the remaining seven games to secure their first top three finish since 1990.

Liverpool currently sit ninth in the league and aim to secure Champions League football, yet they are still in contention to win the Europa League and gain access to Europe’s premier competition this way.

Past results

When the two teams met earlier in the season at White Hart Lane, neither team were able to find the back of the net. Yet the corresponding fixture at Anfield the season before saw Liverpool triumph in a 3-2 win.

Past meetings would suggest that Liverpool will take all three points this weekend, yet the Reds face an altogether different Spurs team than previous seasons.

Liverpool have not lost in their last six Premier League meetings with Spurs, scoring 18 goals in total. However, Tottenham were previously prone to conceding numerous goals and this season, in contrast, the North London club has the best defensive record in the league, having conceded only 24 goals.

In addition to this, Tottenham have won only one of their 21 league visits to Anfield, but the North London club have lost only one of their last 14 league away matches.

Injury news

Jan Vertonghen, Nabil Bentaleb and Clinton N’Jie are still out for Tottenham, but Mauricio Pochettino has assured fans that Vertonghen is ‘very close’ while N'Jie is ‘doing well’.

Reports suggested that Erik Lamela suffered a muscle injury while training with Argentina for their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bolivia, but he arrived back in England on Thursday and is to be assessed before the game. Alderweireld, who pulled out of the Belgium squad with illness, is back fit.

Tottenham would have been dealt a huge problem had the ever present Alderweireld been ruled out of the game as youngster Cameron Carter Vickers was also ruled out of the USA national squad, leaving only Kevin Wimmer to play in a centre-back position, or converted midfielder Eric Dier.

Liverpool, on the other hand, will be without strikers Divork Origi and Christian Benteke. Jürgen Klopp is hoping that Roberto Firmino and Lucas Leiva will be fit to return for the fixture this weekend, while Phillipe Coutinho is to be assessed due to concerns over the effects of flying on the midfielder.

Predicted Spurs XI: Lloris; Walker, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Rose; Dier, Dembele; Eriksen, Alli, Chadli; Kane.
