Goals from Ollie Watkins and Bertrand Traore saw Villa overcome Steve Bruce's Newcastle at Villa Park.

The win saw Villa leap to 8th position in the Premier League, now with only two games in hand.

Dean Smith spoke to the media following his side's impressive win.

Taking it game by game

The win saw Villa climb up the table, with games in hand still, Smith insisted that his side won't be looking too far ahead and take each game as they come:

"We're looking at the next game. We've gone through a tough spell against Chelsea, United, and City. It was important we made it through tonight and we did.".

Protecting his players

With games coming thick and fast, Dean reiterated the importance of maintaining the fitness of his squad:

"Jack wasn’t happy that I brought him off, he was on four yellows, with five minutes left we thought we’d make sure he wasn’t kicked or got injured!".

Having options

With Ross Barkley returning to the side alongside Trezeguet, Smith was happy with his options within his squad:

"It’s great to have Ross back, he wasn’t happy with me bringing him off but he’s just played 60 and 75 minutes, we’ve got some great attacking options now with Trez coming off the bench.".

Villa and Dean Smith travel to Lancashire to face Burnley next week in the Premier League.
