Arsenal suffered defeat to Aston Villa at the hands of an early Ollie Watkins goal which proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Despite dominating possession, Mikel Arteta's side rued their missed chances.

"We dominated the game"

Despite losing, Arteta felt his team's performance was enough to win three points in Birmingham:

“It was a strong performance, we dominated the game and our opponent. But this is the Premier League. If you give your opposition chances this happens."

Arsenal need to be "ruthless"

Arteta's side had 66% possession against Villa, with 14 shots, but only three on target. His side also had over double the number of corners Villa had in seven.

Despite this, Arteta stated his team must do better:

“If you aren’t ruthless in the box then you can lose these kinds of games."

Partey concerns

On the 74th minute, Arteta brought midfielder Thomas Partey off for Willian. The decision to bring Willian on at the time seemed like a tactical one, Arteta went on to explain his thoughts behind the change:

“Partey had a muscular issue, we had to bring him off. He wasn't feeling well enough to continue. We don’t know the extent of the injury yet”.

Arsenal's host Leeds United at the Emirates on Sunday, February 14th, and will look to get back to winning ways as they hunt for European football.
