Ahead of Newcastle United's clash with Manchester United this weekend, VAVEL looked back to December 2013 where Alan Pardew's European-chasing Magpies side claimed their first league victory at Old Trafford since 1972.

Yohan Cabaye wrapped up all three points for Newcastle when he slotted away Moussa Sissoko's cut-back cross.

Robin van Persie had a header disallowed as the hosts continued to pile the pressure on, but The Toon held on for a historic three points, a result that put even more pressure on Red Devils boss David Moyes.

Story of the game

The opening exchanges of the match were even, with the first real chance falling to makeshift-midfielder Phil Jones, whose effort was straight at Tim Krul.

Newcastle opening chance came soon after, and it was no surprise it was through their top scorer Loic Remy, but the Frenchman could not steer his header on target.

Yohan Cabaye was the next to drag an effort off target, as The Magpies looked to assert themselves in this game.

Javier Hernandez did had a penalty shout waived away by referee Andre Marriner after he went down seemingly through no contact from Fabrizio Coloccini.

Mathieu Debuchy was denied twice in the space of a few minutes just before half-time, one courtesy of an excellent Remy through-ball, and the second being a header that was saved comfortably by David De Gea.

Despite the hosts pressuring, it was Newcastle that found the finishing touch

Manchester United came flying out of the blocks after the interval and Krul made two big saves to deny Hernandez's first, before getting down low to his left to stop Adnan Januzaj from breaking the deadlock.

David Moyes will have been scratching his head at how his side did not take the lead when a combination of the post and Vurnon Anita kept out Patrice Evra's effort from nestling itself into the back of the net.

Despite the hosts piling the pressure on, it was Newcastle that snatched the lead as Moussa Sissoko drove down the left-hand side and effortlessly cut the ball back to Cabaye, whose side footed effort found its way into the bottom-left hand corner of the net to give The Toon the ascendancy in the North West.

Manchester United thought they were level when Robin van Persie headed home Januzaj's free-kick but the offside flag was raised to ensure Newcastle went on to end a wait of over 40 years for a win at Old Trafford.

Man of the match - Yohan Cabaye

If anything, it is harsh to only be able to award one player man of the match, because every Newcastle player was simply magnificent on that cold December afternoon in Manchester.

But it is only right that the man who scored the goal to end a run that long is given the award, and that man is Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye was a classy as ever with his work in the centre of Newcastle's midfield, winning key battles in the middle of the park, as well as being the key orchestrator of the Newcastle attack – which saw him in the end bag the winning goal.

It was those sort of performances from the Frenchman that sealed him his big money move to Paris Saint Germain in 2014.

Starting XI's

Manchester United: De Gea; Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra; Nani, Jones, Cleverley, Januzaj; van Persie, Hernandez. (4-4-2)
