Burnley continued their pre-season with a 1-0 win at Blackpool on Tuesday night.

It was an entertaining game at a busy Bloomfield Road and was a great step up in fitness from the weekend’s win at Oldham for The Clarets.

Bobby Thomas’ header 15 minutes from time gave Sean Dyche’s side the win by the seaside.

  • Story of the game

Lewis Richardson had the first chance of the game and forced a save by Chris Maxwell in the Tangerines’ goal.

Both teams were pushing for the opening goal of the game, with Jay Rodriguez picking out Richardson inside the area for Burnley, but the teenager curled his effort wide.

Dwight McNeil continued The Clarets early dominance with a direct drive towards goal, but his eventual shot continued to rise over the bar.

Wayne Hennessey made his first start for Burnley and was called into action before half time when Jerry Yates forced the Wales ‘keeper into a save.

And then Demetri Mitchell cut inside to cause Hennessey to palm another chance away to safety.

McNeil then fizzed a driven effort past the post, but only just.

Both teams made a number of changes at half time, and the visitors made the fastest start.

Maxwell made a good save from Rodriguez before Jack Cork had an effort blocked inside the 18-yard area.

Ashley Barnes did have the ball in the back of the net but was flagged for offside as both teams continued to search for that elusive first goal.

Erik Pieters flashed an effort past the post before James Husband raced across to block Barnes’ effort out for a corner.

It was from said corner that the Clarets opened the scoring.

Bobby Thomas rose highest at the back-post to give Burnley the lead with a towering header into the back of the net.
