Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday as noisy neighbours Liverpool come to town.

Being one of the oldest and most fierce rivalries in football history, Sunday's clash will be about much more than the three points.

But for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, three points could be pivotal in transforming their season after picking up just one point from a possible nine in their last three league games.

Liverpool, however, have looked formidable in recent weeks and currently sit second in the table with four more points than United.

A win for the visitors wouldn't quite be as essential as a win would be for The Red Devils, but that is not to say that Jurgen Klopp's men would settle for anything less than victory at Old Trafford.

Let's take a look at everything you need to know ahead of the highly anticipated encounter.

  • Team News:

United attacker Anthony Martial is back training and could be available for Sunday's match after missing the two most recent games after picking up an injury during international duty.

And despite captain Harry Maguire returning to full fitness after playing against Leicester and Atalanta, his fellow centre-back Raphael Varane is absent due to an ongoing groin issue following the UEFA Nations League Final.

Marcus Rashford picked up a knock during Wednesday's Champions League tie but is expected to be available again on Sunday.

Solskjaer has also claimed in his press conference that both Bruno Fernandes and Fred are doubts after picking up niggles against Atalanta, but both could still yet feature.

The visitors will be without Thiago Alcantara after he recently joined Harvey Elliott on the sidelines.

Curtis Jones has trained and should be in contention to be involved at Old Trafford.

  • Predicted Lineups:

Manchester United: De Gea, Shaw, Maguire, Lindelof, Wan-Bissaka, McTominay, Fred, Rashford, Fernandes, Sancho, Ronaldo

Liverpool: Alisson, Robertson, Van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Henderson, Keita, Mane, Salah, Firmino

  • One to watch:

Our one to watch for Sunday's encounter is Marcus Rashford.

After a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a hip injury, the 23-year-old has featured in United's last two games and has found the back of the net on both occasions.

Despite only playing 30 minutes last Sunday and 60 minutes on Wednesday evening, the academy graduate has had a huge impact on both games and has shown signs that he is returning to the formidable player he once was prior to his ongoing injury struggles.

It is well documented that Solskjaer is a big fan of Rashford, and should he cause damage to Liverpool's backline on Sunday, it certainly wouldn't be for the first time.

The Wythenshawe-born attacker has been of great importance in ties against Liverpool in recent years, most notably in March 2018 when he scored a quick-fire brace and left Trent Alexander-Arnold with sleepless nights.

United went on to win that game 2 - 1, and if Rashford has a similar impact on Sunday, the Old Trafford faithful could be singing his name once more.

  • Head to head:

The sides have faced off on a total of 235 occasions, with United winning 89 of those matches. Liverpool have claimed the bragging rights 78 times, whilst 68 games have ended in a draw.

United have failed to win a home league game against their fierce rivals since that 2 - 1 win in March 2018, drawing twice and losing once in the process.

Sunday's visitors ran out 4 - 2 victors on their last trip to Old Trafford thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Mohammed Salah and two from Roberto Firmino.

  • Prediction:

Manchester United 1 - 2 Liverpool
