Manchester United have been knocked out of the FA Cup after Middlesbrough shocked Old Trafford in a penalty shootout.

Boro knocked out the Premier League side 8-7 on penalties.

United have now lost seven of their last eight penalty shootouts.

Story of the game

After the two sides paid tribute to those that tragically lost their lives in Munich 1958, the match got underway and Jadon Sancho delightfully chipped Joe Lumley. Fortunately for the Boro keeper, Sancho's effort struck the bar and Bruno Fernandes failed to convert the rebound.

Paul Pogba was then brought down in the penalty area after a bright start on his return from injury. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and you know the rest...well not this time. The Portuguese forward dragged his effort well wide of the frame - he was clearly put off by the 9000+ away support that were jeering nonstop.

United bounced back and Sancho put them ahead. Fernandes picked out the winger with a wonderful ball over the top of Boro's defence. Sancho controlled it excellently before dispatching the ball into the far corner. It did take a deflection off Isaiah-Jones but the goal was awarded to Sancho for his first at Old Trafford.

On the half-hour mark, Marcus Rashford struck a sweet strike through the legs of Lumley but it was ruled out as he strayed offside in the build-up.

The game opened up in the later stages of the first half and Boro almost took advantage when Folarin Balogun curled an effort high and wide after a quick counter.

In the early stages of the second half, Sancho caused Boro trouble again as he picked out Rashford at the far post but he missed the target.

Moments later, Rashford's pull back was hammered into the side netting by Ronaldo. It just was not his night.

Boro charged forward through Marcus Tavernier before Matt Crooks forced Dean Henderson into making a decent save - his first involvement of the night.

Boro did find an equaliser shortly after the 60-minute mark as United's defence seemed to stop for a brief second. Crooks tapped the ball into an empty net after Duncan Watmore controlled the ball with his arm and squared his cross.

United then had a glorious opportunity to regain the lead but Fernandes' strike hit the post. He had an empty net to aim at.

Fred then clipped a ball into the box to the other substitute, Anthony Elanga. His diving header was way wide of the target and United looked lost for inspiration.

The full-time whistle blew and the match went to extra time in search of a winner.

The first half of extra time saw United have the majority of possession but created very little as Boro held on.

Boro nearly snatched a winner at the death, Aaron Connollys poked effort was right at Henderson - it was the best chance of the extra-time period.

After 120 minutes, numerous chances wasted by the home side and resilient defending by the Boro - penalties was next.
