Freddy Adu is on trial with Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar the club have announced via their official twitter account @AZAlkmaar:

Good luck on your trial @AZAlkmaar @FreddyAdu! We hope @JozyAltidore has inspired you! #USMNT @ussoccer

Adu if successful on the trial will join fellow American Aron Johannsson at the AFAS Stadion outfit.

Adu was originally picked up by DC United in the MLS Superdraft at just 14 but never really lived up to his potential. You could say, however, that he still has time on his hands being just 25. Interestingly, he spent two weeks on trial with Manchester United at 16 but failed to gain a work permit.

Adu, who is most well known to football fans as that "Championship Manager Wonderkid" was given his big break at 18 when Benfica forked out $2 million for him. While at Benfica he made stops in Portugal, France, Greece and Turkey. In 2011 Adu returned to MLS to run out for Philadelphia Union for two seasons.

Adu remains out of contract since his release from Bahia in Brazil after a highly unsuccessful sixth month spell between mid-2013 and the year end.

More recently, Adu has found himself trialling for Blackpool in England and just last month was training with Stabæk in Norway. Adu failed to impress enough to be offered a contract on both trials, hence why he now finds himself in the Netherlands hoping to finally kick start the career everyone expected him to have.

He's undoubtedly had one of the biggest hard luck stories in football and the football mad Americans will be hoping this latest trial will lead to a contract and a revival of his career.
