Schalke 04 chief Clemens Tönnies confirmed earlier to German tabloid Bild that the German side are in negotiations to sign Matija Nastasic from Manchester City in the coming January transfer window.

The Serbian centre-back arrived in Manchester for around £12m in summer 2012 and reports suggest he could be leaving the North West for a similar fee.

“Yes, we are chasing his (Matija Nastasic’s) signature,” Tönnies confessed to Bild.

“Our manager, Roberto di Matteo, has eyed him for his plans. And the player definitely wants to join our club, too.”

In his two, soon to be three, year spell at the Sky Blues, he’s been ineffective and has been shadowed out of the squad making just fifty-one appearances in all competitions. However, some City fans have asked for him to play more regularly after a solid stint alongside club captain Vincent Kompany.

In his time with the Manchester club, he won the Premier League twice and received the accolade of Manchester City Young Player of the Year 2012/13.
