1. FC Kaiserslautern have added a much needed new centre-back to the squad, with Ewerton joining on a year’s loan from Sporting Clube de Portugal.

The 27-year-old Brazilian arrives at the Betze with experience of playing in the UEFA Europa League as well as the top divisions in Portugal and Russia.

He is the eleventh new signing to join Tayfun Korkut’s side, and will compete with Stipe Vucur, Patrick Ziegler and Tim Heubach for a place in the side.

Experience with Braga, Anzhi and Sporting

Ewerton, whose full name is Ewerton José Almeida Santos, spent his formative years with Brazilian club Corinthians Alagoano, not to be confused with Corinthians Paulista. After going on loan to several other Brazilian clubs, the club eventually lent him to SC Braga in Portugal for the 2011-12 season.

He played 32 games in his year with the Portuguese club, contributing a couple of goals, and was then bought on a permanent basis by FC Anzhi Makhachkala at the high of the club's big spending. He made 39 appearances for them, playing with the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Willian and Yuri Zhirkov.

However after failing to hold down a regular place in their side, he was then loaned to Sporting in January 2015, an impressed enough in nine league matches to sign a permanent deal that summer.

In total he has made 29 appearances for them with three goals, although his move to Germany comes as his chances in the Sporting side grew increasingly limited.

An upgrade to their defence

In a brief comment on the club’s website, Kaiserslautern sporting director Uwe Stöver said "we are pleased to have filled the vacancy in central defend with the quality of Ewerton."

The additional to their defence will come as much relief to FCK fans, who have grown use to poor defensive displays from the side in recent times. They kept just eight clean sheets last season, and earned their first of this campaign in Monday night’s 0-0 draw with Fortuna Düsseldorf.

He is the second defender to join the club over the last few days, with Mensur Mujdza joining from SC Freiburg on a free transfer last Friday.
