Final day mayhem ended in silverware glory for Christophe Galtier’s side as they dispatch Stephane Moulin’s Angers 2-1 to clinch the Ligue 1 title.

An evening of huge importance for Lille saw them score both of their goals in the first half - courtesy of Jonathan David's smart finish and a Burak Yilmaz penalty on the stroke of halftime.

A late 92nd-minute goal from Angelo Fulgini saw the hosts bring one back, but Lille managed to hold and win.

David stepped up to perform once again for Lille as he caused numerous problems for the hosts - scoring the game’s first goal ten minutes in and winning Yilmaz’s penalty.

Lille simply could not afford to lose tonight and remarkably showed their big-game credentials on a historic night at the Raymond Kopa.

Runners-up Paris Saint Germain managed to win at Brest, but Mauricio Pochettino’s result did not mean much with his side still finishing a point behind the 2021 league winners.

The stonewall five of Mike Maignan, Sven Botman, Zeki Celik, Jose Fonte, and Reinaldo managed to concede only 23 goals this season - the least goals conceded by a team in Europe's top five leagues.

An emotional Jose Fonte conveyed his thoughts after a brilliant night captaining his side in Angers.

“This is a victory for a team, for talent, for hard work, for everyone".

The first title in eleven years further amplifies the sensational job Galtier has done as manager of the Les Douges.

The French boss spoke after tonight’s win and believes Luis Campos is the lynchpin of the great team he has at his disposal.

“Luis Campos was the architect of this team. I can't tell you how much I love this squad. I love them so deeply. The players are the heroes."

Having sold Victor Osimhen and Gabriel for a combined fee of €96million in 2020, Campos had replaced the duo with David and Yilmaz for the 2020/21 season.

The dynamic duo has now wrestled Lille to a historic title win and combined for 29 leagues this season.

It was only back in 2019 when Galtier had saved Lille from the prospects of going into Ligue 2. And now two years later, the Lille boss has trumped PSG to a league title.

The Frenchman has failed to lose against PSG in both meetings this season and remarkably ends the title-winning campaign having seen his side only lose three times. A feat that has only been bettered once since the start of the century.

Unfortunately for the Lille faithful, Galtier is set to depart Lille and join OGC Nice for next season’s Ligue 1 campaign

Yilmaz’s revival campaign saw the Turkey International inspire the Les Rouges with a glittering individual campaign. The 36-year old veteran managed to get 16 goals and 5 assists in 28 games for the club.

Midfield duo Boubakary Soumare and Renato Sanches end a wonderful campaign at the heart of the Lille midfield.

Sanches looks to have played his way back into the Portugal side with Fernando Santos extremely pleased with the 23-year-old performances.

While, Soumare will be a man in high demand this summer - amidst reports of a move to the Premier League

Lille will now enter the 2021/22 campaign as defending champions for only the fourth time in their history.
