The 24-year-old Belgian rider Jasper Stuyven has extended his stay with Trek-Segafredo till 2018 after what has been a successful Classics campaign for the rider.

Stuyven has had a breakthrough Spring as he won Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and then rode well in support of the soon to be retiring Fabian Cancellara in Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders, and now he has been rewarded with an improved deal.

The next aim for Stuyven is to build on his game: to be able to contest for wins on a more regular basis is something the Belgian is improving on, as well as being able to perform better in the Grand Tours.

Stuyven feels ‘super good’ with Trek

Stuyven only joined Trek in the 2014 season, and in the Vuelta a Espana last year he won stage 8 with a broken scaphoid.

He has drawn similarities to his teammate and fellow compatriot Cancellara in regards to his toughness, and if he replicate anything like the success ‘Spartacus’ had, Stuyven will have a hugely successful cycling career.

Speaking on the new deal, Stuyven said: "I'm very happy to stay with Trek-Segafredo. I feel super good with this team, and I don't want to go anywhere else.”

Winning Kuurne was a big moment for the young rider, but he was also handed some extra responsibility by general manager Luca Guercilena in the other Classics; so the 24-year-old is rapidly learning about the cut-throat nature of cycling.

The logical progression is for Stuyven to have a say in the big Classics like Roubaix, Flanders, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

"I want to be better in the finals of Monuments - play a bigger role there and 'make' the race,” said Stuyven.

"Re-signing Jasper was a priority for us, and I’m glad we came to an agreement so easily. I was very pleased with his performance in the Classics and of course his impressive solo win in Kuurne,” said a pleased Guercilena.
