Two club sides never to have been relegated from the Nigeria football league are Heartland FC and Enugu Rangers Int. Back in the 70s to the mid-80s, Rangers were one of the biggest teams in Nigeria boasting players like Christian Chukwu, Aloysius Ateugbu, Emmanuel Okala etc.

These players were part of the Green Eagles that won the AFCON in 1980. Newer generation includes players like Austin 'jay jay' Okocha, Onyekachi Apam, and Michael Emenalo who also donned the jersey of the illustrious club.

League winners in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984, add Five FA Cups to the mix, you have one of the greatest club sides in the country.

As the landscape of football changed, the club remained stagnant which brought about an inevitable fall from grace. Poor management, poor recruitment policies were the some of the issues the club faced over the years.

On the field of play, the club has been criticized for 'choking' at the decisive moments when it came to the title run in.

Fast forward to 2016, Rangers are on the verge of recreating history, sitting at the top of the league with eight games left, this could be the year they write their names into the record books.

The Imama Amapakabo led team looks set to reward the passionate fans of Enugu who have been starved of success in recent years with a league title. The question remains, will Enugu Rangers 'choke' at the decisive moment?
